As the subject says, today is the 80th birthday of the man who co-created the Doom Patrol and essentially wrote its entire original run -- Arnold Drake. Drake's DP was a stand-out at DC in the 1960s, a series that -- filtered through his own unique viewpoint -- brought some of the angst and humor and serial nature of that era's Marvel Comics into the DC Universe. It's a brilliant run of comics and that sort of cutting-edge feel was what folks like Grant Morrison, John Arcudi and others have tried to capture in the decades afterward. Drake also helped created Deadman and Stanley & His Monster and wrote thousands of other scripts for series like Batman, Challengers of the Unknown, Space Ranger, the SHOWCASE run of Tommy Tomorrow, the Phantom Stranger, lots of humor series (Plastic Man, Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, Dobey Gillis, Little Lulu, et al.) and, in 1950, arguably the first graphic novel, "It Rhymes With Lust." Join me in wishing Mr. Drake a happy 80th birthday! [I'll try to forward a link to this thread (and duplicates at OTHER DCU TOPICS and the DP Board) to him.] John Wells IP: Logged |

Thanks, everyone! It turns out that, despite the APA-I announcement to the contrary, that March 1 was only Mr. Drake's 79th birthday ... according to the man himself. But he appreciates the good wishes nonetheless and I've forwarded the links to these threads to him. Thanks again. John IP: Logged |

Whoops! A few hours too late, but... Happy Birthday, Mr. Drake! Congratulations and thanx for adding to so much to DC. Deadman and especially DP are very special creations, and the latter especially is very dear to me. So this fanboy owes you! And that's not even taking into account all the other writing you've done for the company! I also respect you for the foresight and real thinking you put into your comments in response to Marvel's rise. I think a lot of the DC people who spoke on the subject were head-in-the-sand cheerleaders, but you certainly weren't. You were an astute observer and pushed for what you saw (correctly) as a continued raising of the bar in the medium/industry. So, thanx! Take care, ------------------ IP: Logged |

Tell Mr. Drake that the first time I ever read Doom Patrol was last year with the publishing of DC Archives Vol. 1. Then tell Mr. Drake that I enjoyed the heck out of it- what fun! It is with this in mind that I would like to wish Mr. Drake a very happy birthday and we'll see him ten years from now when perhaps the whole Doom Patrol run is under Archives covers? (Or perhaps even sooner? HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ------------------ IP: Logged |
